The
FastTrak TX2000 Ultra ATA/133 RAID Controller is an extremely easy to use and
set-up card. If you willing to spring for the harddrives to run the card
correctly, then you should have few problems setting up and enjoying the speed
of RAID. Games startup fast; maps load quickly and, assuming the rest of you
gear is running well, you’ll never be the last one in the game again. As
expected the add-on TX2000 card was faster than the KG7-R’s onboard RAID
controller was. It didn’t need to share as many instructions with the CPU,
because it handles them on its own. Regardless, of the reasons the performance
difference, both controllers were much faster than standard EIDE contollers.
The
FastTrak TX2000 Ultra ATA/133 RAID Controller was much quicker than we expected,
twice as fast on the benchmark readings. So, is it better to purchase a
mainboard with onboard RAID or should you get the add-on card? That depends on
other variables, like the number of PCI slots you need available or your budget.
But, clearly the add-on card is an option for those who do not want to purchase
a different mainboard. Based on the speed compared to an onboard RAID
controller, a new mainboard without RAID might be an option too. The money you
save could help defer the cost of a FastTrak TX2000 Ultra ATA/133 RAID
Controller. It’s only about $120.
