Three-Way Gaming Mouse Showdown
PistolMouse FPS

FPS PistolMouse

The MonsterGecko PistolMouse FPS is an interesting device, to say the least. It is an 800dpi optical mouse shaped like a pistol!

Here's what MonsterGecko gives for technical specs for the PistolMouse FPS on their web site:

Resolution: 800 dpi sensor with optimized lens (See note)
Image processing: up to 2300 frames per second
Speed:14 inches per second
Response: 3.2 milliseconds
Data Throughput: Conforms to USB 1.5Mbps specification, Version 1.1
Note: Due to an improved lens design included on all production models, the actual resolution measurement for the PistolMouse FPS is an effective 900+ dpi resolution as measured on a test fixture with 0.001 inch accuracy.

The concept behind the PistolMouse is an interesting one, but one that still needs a bit of work. The trigger requires far too much pull for a mouse-click to register and double-clicking becomes an experience in frustration in a very short time. Right-clicking is accomplished using your middle finger (or whichever finger you place underneath the trigger guard). It's almost like trying to squeeze the trigger with the wrong finger. In Painkiller, a game which relies very heavily on the use of the right mouse button, it is almost impossible to use the PistolMouse successfully because of the right mouse button placement.

The scroll wheel, on the other hand, was fairly easy to use, just not easy to use if you only wanted to move one place with it. Scrolling long distances, easy. Changing weapons with any degree of accuracy, nearly impossible. There is almost no sense of any kind of stopping point as you'er scrolling to let you know when to stop. Yes, the scroll wheel is also a button, but only from the left side. That means righties have no trouble using it, lefties may as well not even try.

UPDATE:

After trying the scroll wheel button from the left-handed side some more, I found that the button does indeed work. Since I don't mouse left-handed, I just had trouble being coordinated enough to get it to work the first time I tried.
