Saitek PC Gaming Keyboard
Introduction

Introduction

When most gamers think of gaming keyboards, they usually think of two companies; Logitech and Microsoft. Well, I have here today a third company that should be added to that list: Saitek. Saitek has been making joysticks for the flight sim crowd for ages and now they're braching out into keyboards. Their first effort is the model I'm reviewing today, the PC Gaming Keyboard. An unpretentious name for a product that just might have what it takes to be pretentious and get away with it! I'd like to thank Tiffany at Saitek for providing the sample used for this review.

What's in the box?

Saitek's PC Gaming Keyboard comes in a box that is a little bit longer than the average 104 key keyboard box. That is so there is room for the Command Pad, which comes with the PC Gaming Keyboard and adds a whole new level of functionality to the package. More on that in a bit.

Saitek didn't spend a lot on a fancy manual. After all, if you're buying a new keyboard you probably have a pretty good idea of what it can do. The CD contains drivers, manuals, and Saitek's Smart Technology software, which is what will be used to set up profiles for the Command Pad. Unfortunately for some of you, the Saitek Smart Technology software only works on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

A Closer Look at the Keyboard

One thing you may have noticed is that the keys on the PC Gaming Keyboard are all at the same level. On most keyboards, the keys slope upward from the spacebar. This means that your hand and wrist have to angle upward to reach the function keys, because they are higher than the other keys. Think along the lines of stadium seating and you'll see what I mean.

Saitek didn't forget about you folks that like having an angles keyboard, that's why they put feet on it just for you. There's also an adjustable wrist rest, for those of us that just can't hold our hands like they tried to teach us in typing class. The wrist rest can also be removed completely, if you so desire.
