With that out of the way it is time for the next task.Mapping out the power grid will let you know just which circuits go where. While you may have some indication as to what power goes where by the labels on the circuit breaker or fuse box, it is best to go through it before you setup. What this usually entails is someone flipping circuit breakers while a second person watches to see which outlets power up.While this is an acceptable way to go about things, advances in technology help us save time.
In the last few years a few companies have come out with circuit breaker finders. This tool can save an immense amount of time and save you from having to reprogram the clocks.Circuit breaker finders use a transmitter and receiver to find out which outlets are plugged into each breaker. The transmitter is plugged into the outlet in question and then the receiver is placed next to each breaker.Depending on the model, the receiver will either flash or beep when the correct breaker is found. These devices can be found in most any hardware store.
When mapping out the power it is usually best to draw a picture of the rooms you’re mapping, and to label where each outlet is.Once you have that done you can label which breaker each outlet is connected to.Take note of what amperage each breaker is rated for. This will help in the next section.
So this is a sample map layout. Use markers, paper, crayons, pens, pencils, whatever you have on hand and draw the layout of the room(s). The numbers in this sample layout match the breakers the plugs run off of. You'll notice that just because two plugs are near each other, it does not mean they are on the same circuit. Likewise, just because 2 plugs are far away, they could still be on the same circuit. Use your best judgement when routing the power cords so as not to leave them where they will be tripped over. Tape is always good for keeping them in place, where it can be used.
