Introduction: Bluetooth,
a wireless networking technology that offers modest performance in a secure,
energy efficient package, stands at the forefront of a new wireless age.
Supported by a Special Interests Group formed by hundreds of companies that lead
technological development, Bluetooth aims to unite a variety of electronic
devices in the home, car, and at work. Unique specifications, network layers,
and topology make Bluetooth's wireless functionality possible.
Purpose: Bluetooth was
envisioned by Ericsson, and later created with the help of other companies such
as IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba, who intended to support and promote this new
wireless standard. The de facto standard they created allows numerous devices
from different companies to interact seamlessly. The name "Bluetooth", given by
Ericsson, the primary developer of the technology, comes from the Denmark King,
Harald Bluetooth, who united Denmark and Norway around 900AD.
Ideally, Bluetooth would connect all the
electronic data oriented devices in your home into a Personal Area Network
(PAN). Your Computer, PDA, mobile phone, stereo, computer peripherals, and
others would all be interconnected, and could exchange data cooperatively as
needed. For example, your Bluetooth enabled computer receives an email, which it
wirelessly forwards to your PDA or mobile phone. In another example, your
computer receives a music file from a Bluetooth external modem, and then streams
that music file to your Bluetooth home stereo. Some Bluetooth stereos could even
play music streamed directly from the Internet, on demand.
In addition to your own PAN, roaming services
can be used while traveling from one area to another. On the road, your
Bluetooth MP3 player streams music to your car stereo while your PDA
automatically pays for fuel at a Bluetooth enabled gas station. When entering an
office or other building, any news or messages can be transmitted to your PDA or
mobile phone. The possibilities of interaction are literally endless.
